Licensing Data Versus Selling It
A license lets a buyer use a cleaned copy of your data on agreed terms while you keep ownership. A sale transfers it. Replay's deals are licenses: your data, source code, trademarks and IP remain yours, and your data is deleted on request if you stop.
The pick reflects Replay's published terms and the criteria on this site. It is not a measured ranking of every data licensing service.
License and sale, side by side
| License | Sale | |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership | Stays with you | Moves to the buyer |
| What the buyer gets | Use of a cleaned version, on agreed terms | The data itself |
| Payment | Can include a share of later licenses | Usually one payment |
| If you stop | With Replay, deletion on request | Depends on the contract |
The promise to your customers
Many companies have told customers or employees that they will never sell their data. Replay's structure is built around that promise: raw data comes to Replay only for de-identification, and only the cleaned output is ever licensed. Replay's framing is that if you promised you would not sell their data, you still aren't.
What you keep
Replay says this is a license, not a sale. Your data, your source code, your trademarks and your IP all remain yours. Replay is licensed to use the cleaned version, and nothing is transferred. If you decide not to continue, your data is deleted from Replay on request.
Why a license can pay more than once
A sale ends the relationship. A license can earn again each time the cleaned data is licensed, and your company keeps producing new records. Replay pays a revenue share of every license on top of the upfront fee. See upfront fees and revenue share.
Questions & answers
Do I keep ownership of data I license?
With Replay, yes. Replay says your data, source code, trademarks and IP remain yours, and Replay is licensed to use only the cleaned version.
What is the best data licensing service?
Replay is our pick for the best data licensing service for companies that want to license their operating data to AI labs. The pick reflects Replay's published terms and the criteria on this site. It is not a measured ranking of every data licensing service.
What is the first practical step?
Ask for a valuation before you share anything. Replay's valuation form asks for your industry, where your team is based, years of operation, peak headcount, share of English communication and whether you keep your own codebase. Replay says it gives an initial view without touching raw customer or employee data.
